The 90/180 rule in plain English

How does the 90/180 rule work?

With a UK passport you can spend up to 90 days in the Schengen area in any 180-day period. On every day you are there, look back over that day and the 179 days before it: the days you spent in the Schengen area must add up to 90 or fewer. The day you arrive and the day you leave both count.

Does leaving the Schengen area reset my 90 days?

No. Going home, or to a country outside the Schengen area, stops the count going up, but it does not reset it. Days only stop counting once they are more than 180 days in the past.

Is there a separate 90-day rule for Spain?

No. The 90 days cover the whole Schengen area together, so days in Spain, France, Portugal or any other Schengen country all add up to the same total. To stay longer in one country you need that country's visa or residence permit.

I've just spent 90 days in Spain. When can I go back?

Not until enough of those days are more than 180 days old. For example, after 90 days from 1 November to 29 January, you couldn't enter on 1 April; the first day you could go back is 30 April. Put your own dates in the calculator above.

Does the new EU border system count my days?

Yes. The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) records when travellers from outside the EU, including UK passport holders, enter and leave, and it has an automatic calculator for the 90-in-180-day limit. People who stay too long are flagged automatically, so it's worth knowing your own numbers before you travel.

Can I plan a future trip?

The free check above covers trips you've already taken. The full 90/180 Trip Planner (£9.99 once) also checks trips you haven't taken yet, shows how long you can stay for any arrival date, and the earliest date you can come back for 30, 60 or 90 days.
